Concept
“GMS Ophthalmology Cases – An Open Access Journal” publishes case reports in ophthalmology in English language. Submissions should either be original, innovative, or educational/tutorial presenting established knowledge but with new imaging technique (e.g. SDOCT).
The open access type of publication is highly suitable for case reports. Case reports are usually difficult to publish since most journals give citation impact priority. Nevertheless, the educational nature of case reports means an important reference library to clinicians and researchers alike. For that reason “GMS Ophthalmology Cases – An Open Access Journal“ provides unlimited free access to all full texts including images and other supplementary data. Case reports published via “open access” achieve a wider reach compared to subscription access publication, because they are more likely to be located and because they are downloaded more frequently.
“GMS Ophthalmology Cases – An Open Access Journal” is published by German Medical Science (GMS), the portal of the Association of Scientific Medical Societies (AWMF) in Germany. Highly secure servers of German Institute of Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) guarantee a sustained access and citability of papers and data. “GMS Ophthalmology Cases – An Open Access Journal” strives for being screened by MEDLINE and collecting impact factor credits.

Peer Review Process
The review process aims to ensure that only high-quality scientific and innovative manuscripts will be published, which provide new and interesting information to the readers. The process is based on a form of peer review, whereby the submitted manuscript is assessed by experts, who are well versed in the relevant field. The experts remain anonymous towards the author, but also towards each other.
For the review there is an online form available for detailed criticism and modification requests for the manuscript. The author receives these comments in an anonymous form. The review closes with a classification of the work into one out of four categories:
- Accepted in the present form
- Revision necessary
- Rejected, resubmission possible
- Rejected
As long as the editor-in-chief does not have any fundamental reservations, it will be acted on the assessments of the reviewers. In cases of doubt, a further review will be obtained. The work will be accepted for publishing, when the expectations of the reviewers and the editor are fulfilled. If the manuscript is rejected, the authors will receive a rejection message with the detailed comments of the reviewers, in order to make the reasons of the rejection transparent.
The overall goal of all efforts is to make the review of scientific submissions for “GMS Ophthalmology Cases – An Open Access Journal” as transparent as possible and as critical as necessary.
