GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie — Audiological Acoustics

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Audiologie (DGA)

2628-9083

Concept

The German Journal Zeitschrift für Audiologie (Median Verlag, Heidelberg) is an interdisciplinary scientific journal devoted to all aspects of hearing, and at the same time the official organ of the German Audiological Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Audiologie, DGA). The journal exists since 1961. In the first years up to 1997 it appeared under the name of Audiological Acoustics (Audiologische Akustik). Zeitschrift für Audiologie presents itself on this internet platform as E-journal GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie in order to provide public access for all persons interested in the specific topics, without limitations by subscription or membership.

GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics is open for everybody who works with scientific publications. Original articles, reviews, technical reports and case reviews may be published after having passed a consequent peer review procedure.

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Audiologie is a scientific society incorporating all professionals who deal with the basic principles of hearing, the investigation of the reasons for hearing disorders as well as their diagnostics, therapy and rehabilitation.
Editorial Board and reviewers involved in the selection of publications are provided by Zeitschrift für Audiologie. All contributions to GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics are available online for all who are interested – directly, permanently and free of charge. After the open access publication, the manuscripts are printed in the Zeitschrift für Audiologie with reference to the first publication.
Manuscripts can be submitted via the Manuscript Operating System (MOPS) of GMS. In order to achieve international readership, GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics recommends the use of English language. German-language is accepted in case of special reasons. Please note the guiding instructions for authors.

Review Process

The review process aims to ensure that high quality scientific and innovative manuscripts are published that provide readers with new and interesting information. The large number of specialized disciplines represented in the field of audiology requires the cooperation of a broad range of experts on the Editorial Board.

Submitted manuscripts are reviewed by the chief editors and assigned to a suitable member of the editorial board. The selected editorial board member controls the peer review-process, in which the submitted manuscript is evaluated by two experts selected by the editor, who are recognized as professionals in the field. The experts remain anonymous to the author, but also to each other. The period for processing the review is normally 21 working days.

The author receives the comments of the reviewer in anonymous form. The review concludes with a classification of the work into one of four categories:

  1. Accepted in the present form
  2. Revision necessary, resubmission
  3. Rejected, resubmission possible
  4. Rejected

If the evaluations of both reviewers lead to a result of the first or second category, the work can be published as long as neither the editor nor chief editors have fundamental objections. The work will be accepted for publication if the expectations of the reviewers, the editors and the chief editors are met.

If the manuscript is unanimously rejected by the reviewers, the authors receive detailed comments of the reviewers to make transparent why the manuscript was rejected. The commissioned editor or the chief editors reserves the right to change the procedure.

In case of substantially different recommendations, e.g. if only one of the reviewers votes to accept the manuscript, a third reviewer will be engaged. Taking into account the opinion of both assigned editor and the chief editor, a decision is made. This decision usually represents the majority. In this case, the overruled reviewer receives the positive reviews of his two colleagues in anonymous form with a cover letter explaining why the manuscript was accepted for publication despite his refusal. This is crucial, so as not to give the impression of ignoring the sound criticism of an expert. The GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics asks the over voted reviewer to write an invited commentary, which will be published together with the controversial manuscript.

The overriding goal of all efforts is to make the review of scientific papers for GMS Journal of Audiology – Audiological Acoustics as transparent as possible and as critical as necessary.

Special Hints for Authors

Experience has shown that in addition to spelling errors, two other issues are often criticized: on the one hand, there is a lack of reference to existing research or established theories and, on the other, there are often deficiencies in the presentation of statistical data. In case of doubt, it is recommended that a support of a statistician should be sought before the work is submitted.

Often, delays are caused by submitted manuscripts that do not conform to the formal requirements of GMS Zeitschrift für Audiologie – Audiological Acoustics. Each manuscript should be carefully checked for completeness of tables, abstract in both German/English and author’s portrait. Strict adherence to Authors’ Guidelines is strongly recommended.
